Toy Drive

by ag

Last year Yoya reached out to their customers by holding a Toy & Clothes drive to assist The María del Carmen School in the District of Aguablanca in Cali, Colombia. We would like to extend our gratitude to all of those who helped make a difference in these children’s lives last Christmas.

Each child was given toys, clothes and shoes. Also there were toys which were set aside to create a play room so all children could have access to them. This play room now serves as a safe haven in which these kids explore and enjoy their childhood.

The school, which is directed by Sister Edith Palomo, harbors ninety children, ages 5-14. The institution includes a shelter which houses 25 children. The personal story of each child is a dramatic account of poverty, pain, humiliation and rejection.

The purpose of the institution is to provide the children with a basic education complemented by a heroic effort to counter the influence of the environment in which these children live. The school looks to teach these children values, respect and tolerance and contribute to the building of their self-esteem. This effort allows these children a better chance of leading healthy, productive lives, becoming useful citizens conscious of their own self-worth and capable of making a contribution to better their environment.

This initiative has proven that small efforts go a very long way and can impact children’s lives. We would love to continue pursuing and supporting this cause. We will continue aspiring to the spirit of giving back to those in need.

Here are a few images filled with gratitude and joy. We hope they warm your hearts as they certainly have ours.

Sincerely,

The Yoya Family

Wayuu Mochilas

by ag[singlepic id=67 w=800 h=600 float=]

At Yoya we have a passion for handmade pieces. The ones that inspire us and meld with our sensibility and style always have a story behind them.

We’ve gathered a small collection of mochilas (mo-chee-las), a circular base crochet-knit bag that can be worn sideways. These bags are made by the Wayuu Indians in the northern Colombian peninsula of La Guajira.

These mochilas are the maximum expression of the Wayuu knit. They are easily recognizable by their color and design. Each bag is made by one woman, with her own design, and taking her about 20 days to complete.

This indigenous culture expresses themselves through the representation of geometric symbols found in the elements of nature such as animals, plants, and stars. The complexity and intricacy of their designs determine the value of each piece.

For the Wayuu community knitting is much more than just a cultural activity and heritage. For them it signifies a realm in which they express their creativity, intelligence and wisdom. It is a projection of life as they know it.

Hello Everyone!!!

Yoya turned 7 in April and we are ready for the next part of our evolution…our BLOG. Many of you have supported us since day one while others may have only recently discovered the charm and style that makes our store so unique.

Everyone in the Yoya family has been involved in the creation of this blog, and we will all be sharing our passion for children’s fashion and design here. Our hope is that our blog will serve as a source of inspiration and that everyone will be able to share in the Yoya experience no matter where you are in the world.

Welcome.

Past Events

In June 2007, our collaboration with furniture manufacturer Ducduc prompted us to host a fundraiser to benefit the ‘Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Together, within a few hours, we were able to raise over $800 toward pediatric cancer research. See our “Events” section for pictures. To learn more about this charitable organization and perhaps host your own stand visit www.alexslemonade.org

Last year, we helped to introduce the Lemlem fall collection. Lemlem, which means “to bloom” in Amharic was conceived by Liya Kedebe to preserve the ancient art of weaving while encouraging economic independence in her native Ethiopia. The collection is handmade in Ethiopia from natural cotton and offers precious items for infants, children and women.

Tamar Toys

by ac[singlepic id=51 w=800 h=600 float=]

By now Tamar Morgendorff has become known in the style circuit. Her handmade toys are a source of great inspiration to us here at Yoya.

She creates whimsical birdcages, birdhouses and mobiles from just about any creature that roams through the mystical gardens of her imagination.

Tamar’s unique sensibility allows her to combine different fabrics such as cotton, vintage prints, ribbon and buttons in a way that inspire conversation. It invites everyone to dream and create their own story in which her characters come into play.

Foutas

by ag[singlepic id=47 w=800 h=600 float=]

I admit it. I work at Yoya and have officially acquired a fouta addiction. By now my personal collection has become substantial. I have found that there is always a use for them. A fouta changes the mood of a space, be it indoors or outdoors in nature. They are magic, and have the power to transform a changing station, a window or couch in a second. In the summer, foutas make great stroller blankets. They are so easy to carry around in any bag, making it easy to crash and chill in any park in the city. Foutas are super absorbent, light, and easy to wrap around as a pareo. Our store is always filled with vibrant colors ranging from candy spectrums to the more neutral tones. They are made in 100% pure cotton, loomed in ancient tradition and come with handmade fringed edges. Our foutas are designed and custom made in Tunisia.

Yoya Camels

by ag[singlepic id=70 w=800 h=600 float=]

“So what’s up with the camels?” Some ask as they see our beautiful selection of toys throughout the store. Some often confuse these lovely creatures with giraffes, except they are neither one nor the other. “They have one hump”, a child will correct their parent, and that will just make our day here at Yoya. These simple but splendid beings have become a signature toy in the Yoya flair. Our lovely camel most often has a companion, the elephant. They come in a variety of prints, from vintage fabrics, linens and solids, and make a great accent to any room. New ones roam our store regularly. Be sure to check in with us, as this chic caravan of nomads doesn’t stick around for very long.
